Typical job responsibilities of an electrician

An electrician, having specific functional responsibilities, performs his work within the limits of authority set out in his work instructions. Such an internal document is a legal continuation.

Let's consider the main functional responsibilities of an electrician:

  1. The employee must be able to apply basic electrical engineering. Know the physical principles of operation of electrical measuring instruments, electronic devices and other machines used.
  2. Rules for drawing up and using electrical circuit drawings when creating and repairing electrical devices. Including the ability to personally create drawings of the devices being created, using generally accepted conventional graphic symbols of individual components and parts.
  3. Be able to assemble electrical circuits necessary for operation, including conducting their technical and technological tests. When creating circuits and devices, take into account safety regulations, electrical safety, and fire safety.

  6. Carries out technical control over the operation of mounted equipment using alternating current with a squirrel-cage rotor.
  7. Complete mandatory advanced training courses, confirmation of assigned rank and other credentials.

Additional functional responsibilities of an electrician

For additional work, the worker may be assigned an increased scope of labor functions:

  • Conducts mandatory measurements of the insulation resistance of used devices and technical equipment. means, including mounted grounding devices.
  • Methods for carrying out adjustment work recommended by testing and supervisory organizations, including measurements and testing of used instruments, equipment, cables and other technical means.
  • Responsible for the operation of electrical equipment from 1 kV to 10 kV, including alternating current devices up to 1 kV. Additionally, it carries out mandatory maintenance of such equipment, its unscheduled and preventive repairs.
  • Configures and connects electromagnetic current relays.
  • Monitors operating parameters, including maximum losses and thermal protections for used devices and voltage switches.

All professions are important, and each employee has varying degrees of responsibility. And it is of a high level in those professions where you need to work with electricity. Each electrician bears a large burden of responsibility, because the safety of both the employee himself and other people depends on the quality of performance of his job duties. That is why the knowledge and practical skills of a person in this profession must be at a high level, as well as the ability to perform their duties efficiently. The electrician, in addition, must take seriously compliance with safety rules when working with electrical appliances and when putting them into operation.

Job description

Every enterprise where there is a position related to working with electricity must have at its disposal a document that is called the job description of an electrician. The main responsibilities of craftsmen in this position include installing and laying lines that provide the building with electricity.

In addition, he must install various equipment, including transformers, motors, and the like. A person must be able to use in his practice special mechanical devices necessary for supporting lines, tensioning wires and cables; these are the main responsibilities; an electrician must cope with them all.

The main difference between an electrician and an electrician is that the latter maintains finished equipment and repairs it, while the former carries out electrification of buildings and premises from the very beginning, installing all equipment from scratch. The job description of an electrician must contain a list of all responsibilities assigned to representatives of this profession. This must be documented and agreed upon with the employee. In addition, the document must contain the following information:

  • Basic information about what kind of profession this is, that is, all the requirements for the employee’s qualifications, to whom he reports when working at this enterprise, and the like.
  • It must be written down what responsibility falls on the person holding this position.
  • The document must also list the rights of the electrician.

According to the law, there are no clear rules and regulations on exactly how the job description of an electrician should be drawn up. But the above structure is considered basic for all enterprises in the country. And in most cases, it is precisely this that is used when drawing up the necessary documents.

Job responsibilities of an electrician

The most basic factor influencing what duties an employee must perform is the focus of the area of activity of the enterprise where he gets a job. Therefore, an employee’s responsibilities may include many work aspects, depending on the basic needs of the enterprise. But there is still a list of things that any representative of this profession should be able to do well:

  • Assembling circuits.
  • Checking the operation of electrical appliances.
  • Cable cutting and subsequent insulation.
  • Relay settings.
  • Control of wire insulation at the enterprise.
  • Taking and checking resistance and voltage readings at different nodes.
  • Grounding installation.
  • Installation and dismantling of electrical devices.

Basic qualification requirements

To begin performing certain duties, an employee must have a certain rank. His admission to perform work of varying complexity depends on this indicator. There are six categories in total, from the simplest to the most complex, respectively. For each category there is a list of knowledge and skills that an employee must possess. All information about them is indicated in ETKS.

To receive a rank, a person must pass an exam before a special commission, which includes testing theoretical knowledge and the ability to practically work with electrical equipment. This is how the rank is assigned. For example, an employee with a 4th category can perform the duties of a 5th category electrician only under the supervision of a more experienced and qualified employee. That is, if a person is hired with an insufficient level of qualifications to perform all the necessary duties, then a person whose documents indicate his high access to various works with electricity must periodically work with him. Otherwise, you need to hire an employee with a sufficient level of qualifications.

Access groups and responsibilities (electrician)

In addition, there is another division into five tolerance groups of different levels. For example, a person with a first group permit is an employee whose qualifications allow him to work with various electrical devices, and he can provide assistance if someone gets hurt. But the fifth group is received by engineers and other employees whose responsibilities include installation and organization of electrical engineering activities. Moreover, the voltage during such work can exceed 1 thousand volts.

Responsibility and rights

A very important part of the instructions is the responsibilities of a 4th category electrician and others, but also no less important, it contains a list of employee rights and responsibility for fulfilling their work duties.

Most of the rights of workers are granted to them by the legislation of the country. Such clauses cannot be changed by the management of the enterprise. But many organizations have a work pattern in which they can add additional rights to this list. Basically, among the amendments made to the list of rights, an employee can find the following:

  • The ability to request from management the assistance that an employee needs to carry out his duties.
  • Have access to all projects for review that relate to his work activity and duties as an electrician.
  • Have the right to propose improvements that can improve the work of the enterprise in the area of its responsibilities.
  • The electrician may require obtaining all the information on which the ability to perform his duties depends.

An employee’s responsibility for violations of work or failure to comply with safety rules is fully prescribed by law. If he does not fulfill his duties, then labor law applies. If he violates rights, then liability depends on administrative and criminal law, depending on his actions, and so on.

At the moment, this profession is quite popular and highly paid. To master it, secondary vocational education is sufficient. Most often, enterprises need people who can perform the duties of an electrician of the 3rd category and above.
